Busta Beauty Myth | Curly Hair Shouldn't Be Washed Frequently

For years now, the idea that wrong to wash curly hair too frequently has been knocking about. However it is just straight BS. This myth is born out of an element of truth. Constant hair washing, without putting nourishment back into the hair, will strip any hair of its natural moisture, leaving it dry and prone to damage. However curly hair is no different. As long as curly hair is kept moisturised, washing it frequently is absolutely fine. After all, regular cleansing is the key to hair and scalp health.

Review | OGX Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo & Conditioner

ogx-apple-cider-vinegar-shampoo-review

I don't think there is a haircare brand on earth that seems to have as many collections as OGX. The brand seems to have, at one stage, included every technology, every scent, and every superfood imaginable in its haircare products and I'm here for it. The latest interesting ingredient to carry a OGX collection is apple cider vinegar.

Review: Redken Nature + Science All Soft Shampoo & Conditioner

Redken-Nature+Science-All-Soft-Shampoo-Conditioner-review

Redken has combined the hair benefits provided by both nature and science to create a haircare range as natural as possible. Aptly named Nature + Science, the range is currently made up of three shampoos and three conditioners, one duo for colour treated hair, one for distressed hair, and one for dry and brittle hair. I've been trialing the All Soft duo, as I want my hair to shine for the Gods...

Review: Amika Normcore Signature Shampoo & Conditioner

Amika-Normcore-Signature-Shampoo-Conditioner-review

Amika is an American haircare brand I've had my eye on for some time. I've heard amazing things about several of their products and admire the fact they keep products cruelty-free and free from sulfates, MIT, MCI, phthalates and artificial colors. I'm obsessed with the Perk Up Dry Shampoo (the only product I've tried from the brand) but really wanted to get up close and personal with a shampoo and conditioner. After all, it's my believe that a shampoo and conditioner is the ultimate test for a haircare brand. If they can't get the cleansers right, they're not worth f'ing with! I recently acquired the Amika Normcore Signature Shampoo and Conditioner and I'm falling hard...

The Beauty Myth: Avoid Conditioner If You Have Greasy Hair

False. Greasy hair is caused by the overproduction of sebum on the scalp. Sebum is an oily/waxy substance that is secreted by the sebaceous glands in our skin. When the overproduction of sebum occurs on the scalp, the scalp will become oily and hair will look greasy.

Weekly Worship: Sachajuan Thickening Shampoo & Conditioner

I hate washing my hair. Not because I'm a dirty bitch but because the dirtier & more loaded with dry shampoo my hair is, the thicker and better it looks. As you probably know by now, I have fine hair and it is at it's finest when freshly washed. I've tried using thickening shampoos and conditioners in the past, however I've never seen any benefits...until I discovered the Sachajuan Volume Shampoo & Conditioner...

Holiday Hair Heroes

Aussie-Beach-Mate-review

Summer is here and I'm sure most of you lucky bitches are heading off on holiday to relax, sunbathe and slay. Sadly though, all that sun, sea and sand you're bouncing to is going to cause damage to your locks. I'm talking split ends, tangles and dryness...and that's just a few issues.

Luckily the hair industry has us covered with a variety of products that will not only protect our hair from holiday hazards, but help repair the damage caused. For me, one of the best brand's treating summer hair damage is Aussie and if you're looking to help your hair post-holiday, you need to get acquainted with the cult brand's Beach Mate collection...

The Tuesday Tip: Coconut Oil & Its Beauty Benefits

Skincare ingredients are important; so important, in fact, that they often play a huge role in our decision to purchase certain beauty products. However there are certain ingredients that are so good, they provide beauty benefits all on their own. For example, oils are great at going solo because they are safe to use and provide a wide range of benefits. Olive oil, macadamia nut oil and argan oil are particular favourites, however this feature is all about coconut oil.

Coconut oil is a nutrient-rich ingredient that has antiseptic, antifungal and antibacterial properties. It is also packed with antioxidants such as vitamin E, phytosterol and phenol and it is unusually rich in short and medium chain fatty acids. These properties enable coconut oil to deeply nourish the skin, as well as repair skin and protect it from environmental damage.

Coconut oil also helps to improve hair health, thanks to its ability to nourish the scalp and treat problems such as dandruff. Cutting to the chase, coconut oil can be used for all kinds of things. I use it for just about anything - from softening my cuticles and removing makeup to cleaning my makeup brushes and shaving my legs! So the tip this Tuesday is simply to invest in coconut oil. It is cheap (around £3.00 for 500ml) and will cover a variety of your beauty needs. If that's not enough to convince you, Gisele Bundchen, Miranda Kerr and Angelina Jolie swear by it...and look at them!

Now, if you don't want to dive on the coconut oil bandwagon just yet, start with some products that contain coconut oil as a main ingredient. My current favourite coconut concoctions are the OGX Weightless Hydration Coconut Water Conditioner 385ml (£6.99 Boots / $7.99 ULTA) and the L'Erbolario Tiarè Crema Fluida Corpo 200ml.

Ingredients 101: Macadamia Nut Oil

Natural or Synthetic: Natural

Origin: Macadamia nut oil is expressed from the nut meat of macadamia, an Australian rainforest tree.

Location: Macadamia is native to the East Coast rainforests of North Eastern parts of Australia

Beauty Benefits: Macadamia nut oil has a variety of beauty benefits and, because of this, it is used as a key ingredient in many cosmetic products. Firstly, Macadamia nut oil contains one of the highest sources of palmitoleic fatty acids. Palmitoleic acid naturally occurs in our skin and it is vital for delaying skin and cell ageing, however the amount of palmitoleic acid in our skin decreases with age. So it is the high levels of this miracle acid that makes macadamia nut oil a fabulous anti-ager.

In addition to palmitoleic acid, macadamia nut oil also contains oleic acid, a fatty acid which has great regeneration and moisturising properties, and linoleic acid, another fatty acid which helps prevent trans epidermal water loss.

When it comes to hair, macadamia nut oil is just as beneficial. Macadamia oil moistures and replenishes the hair without weighing it down or making it greasy. It also protects the hair from harmful UV rays and improves shine and elasticity.

Warnings: Macadamia nut oil is safe to use topically

Found in: O&M Original Detox Conditioner 350ml (£23.00 Selfridges). This conditioner deeply cleanses the hair of dirt, styling products and natural oil build-up that leaves hair looking dull. Free from parabens, MIT and triclosan, the Original Detox Conditioner smells minty and fresh, thanks to Australian river mint and peppermint. These ingredient provide a gorgeous tingly sensation on the scalp, perfect when you're in need of a morning pick-me-up. It leaves my hair looking shiny, healthly and squeaky clean!

The Tuesday Tip: Honey Highlights

Glossy, healthy looking hair is every girl's dream and this week I have a cheap and natural trick that will make this dream a reality. The trick is very simple and only requires one thing...honey!

Add one tablespoon of honey to your conditioner to make hair strong and super shiny. Honey also lightens hair, which is an added benefit for those wanting to give highlights a real boost.

You can add honey to any conditioner, regardless of the type or cost. However I would advise pairing it with a shine-enhancing conditioner to get the most out of your wash! The perfect partner would be the Tara Smith Shine On Conditioner 250ml (£10.00 M&S). It is a vegan conditioner that contains five fermented, essential minerals to help smooth, moisturise and strengthen the hair.

Weekly Worship: Organix Biotin and Collagen Shampoo and Conditioner

Organix Biotin and Collagen Shampoo and Conditioner

Price: £6.99 / $5.74 385ml

Stockist: Boots Walmart

This week's worship is going to two recently discovered hair heroes, Organix Biotin and Collagen Shampoo and Conditioner. They promise to provide thicker, fuller and healthier looking hair and, for the most part, I would agree.

I have disgustingly fine hair and find that using this shampoo and conditioner together makes my hair soft, bouncy and full of volume. Unlike other volumizing hair products, these two don't dry out my hair, which is a big bonus.

The Biotin and Collagen Shampoo and Conditioner don't seem to make my hair that much thicker, however the volume they provide is pretty amazing - especially considering the affordable price tag!

Ask TBI: How To Fight The Fade

Question: I have red hair and dye it every 6 weeks. However the colour always fades after just two weeks of having it done. Is there any way to prevent the colour fading so quickly? - Kelsey, San Diego.

Answer: Coloured hair will always have a nasty habit of fading, however red hair fades like no other! Red dyes rinse out more easily than brown or blonde dyes. To make matters worse, red hair is more likely to become damaged or faded as a result of UV exposure.

Luckily there are a number of little things you can do to help make your colour last:
  • After having your hair coloured, wait two days before washing it
  • Protect your hair from UV exposure with a hat, scarf or a hair protection product
  • Avoid shampoos that contain sulfate
  • Use a shampoos and conditioners that are specifically designed for colour treated hair
  • Avoid washing your hair every day
  • Wash your hair in cold water (if you're brave enough!)

I would also recommend using a colour enhancing conditioner once or twice a week. One of the best I have ever used is the Aveda Madder Root Colour Conditioner 250ml (£20.00 aveda.co.uk / $18.00 aveda.com). I honestly cannot recommend this product highly enough. This miracle conditioner contains madder root which helps to purify the scalp and hair. The natural colours of the madder root also intensify red hues, resulting in vibrant and glossy red hair that lasts!
