Review: KIKO Smart Lipstick 918 / Classic Rose

KIKO Smart Lipstick 918

The Colour: A satin nude rose

The Price: £3.90

The Stockist: kikocosmetics.co.uk

The Application: This lipstick glides on the lips like butter. It has a nourishing texture that feels velvety smooth, almost as if it were a lip balm. The lipstick is perfectly shaped for a quick and faultless application.

It has a vanilla scent, similar to that of a MAC lipstick - one of the many things KIKO has replicated from the global beauty giant. However the quality of a KIKO product is just as good as a MAC product and, considering it costs almost a quarter of the price, I can't really complain!

The Results: A beautiful, nude rose shade with a satin finish. This lipstick is highly pigmented and opaque and, importantly, it doesn't bleed. Considering its finish and price tag, the Smart Lipstick lasts a long time - keeping lips nourished and silky-smooth in the process. Now this lipstick doesn't last all day, however it does last up to four hours before needing to be reapplied. It is also hypoallergenic and paraben free.

KIKO Smart Lipstick Classic Rose

The Pro: This lipstick is truly amazing considering it is only £3.90!

The Con: It is only available in Europe

Are you a fan of KIKO? Have you tried any other products from the brand that you would recommend?

Interview: Malvina Fraser

Malvina Fraser is one of London’s top beauty specialists and skincare advisers. She has over 30 years experience in the industry and her A-list clients include Madonna, Kylie and Yasmin Le Bon. She has passed on her wealth of knowledge to some of the world's most fabulous women's magazine and has appeared on some of TV's top makeover shows. Oh, and did I mention she is the beauty ambassador for Marks & Spencer and  the creator of her own cutting edge anti-ageing creams and serums!?

Malvina took some time out of her packed beauty schedule to talk all things beauty. So sit back and enjoy our little chat...

Malvina Fraser

What inspired you to work in the beauty industry? And how did your career journey begin?

I got into the beauty industry at quite a young age. It has always been a great passion of mine and after training at the London Beauty Institute, I knew it was something I wanted to make a career out of. As the years have gone by, I natural progressed to become a specialist in anti-ageing - an area of the industry that has always fascinated me.

What is your career highlight?

I have had such an amazing career so far and have been very lucky to have worked with some amazing people in the industry. I have to say that my career highlight has been launching my own anti-ageing skincare range. It has been a dream to create the products from scratch. It has been a long journey and it is so fantastic to receive amazing feedback on the products.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to succeed in the beauty industry?

The best advice I could give is to never give up. The beauty industry can be hard to get into but it is all about finding a gap in the market, finding your USP and being persistent. There are so many great beauty products on the market today, so it's important to connect with people in the industry and be passionate about your products or services.

Who is the ultimate beauty icon?

I would have to say Kylie Minogue. She is a regular client of mine and I must say that, as well as being a lovely lady, she has the most amazing skin and is the envy of every woman.

What are your makeup bag essentials?

Oprex is an amazing product to use on sensitive eyes when taking off make-up residue left by remover. It is a saline ointment that will prevent your skin from reacting to the harsh qualities of remover.

Sisley tinted moisturiser is an essential which I have been using for 25 years. I love it because it keeps my skin hydrated, matches my skin colour beautifully and protects my skin.

Sisley tinted moisturiser

What is the biggest beauty crime a person can commit?

Not taking your make-up off is definitely the biggest beauty crime. Our skin is alive with bacteria which we cannot see or feel, therefore maintaining good hygiene is vital. One of my top tips is to always double cleanse at night; once to remove the everyday bacteria and secondly to really clean the skin.

What is your top beauty tip?

When applying facial creams and serums, ensure you work the product right up to the hairline. At night, don’t be afraid to go over the hairline - this small area often gets neglected but it is just as important as the others.

Weekly Worship: Diptyque 50th Anniversary Candle Set

Price: £55.00 / $75.00

Stockists: diptyqueparis.co.uk / aedes.com

Diptyque create the most beautiful scented candles and have been doing so for over 50 years. I am a huge fan of the brand and was close to squealing when I stumbled across the 50th Anniversary Candle Set online.

The set includes 5 mini versions (35g each) of the brand's most loved candles - Thé, Jasmin, Baies, Figuier and Ambre. Also included is a sweet leaflet, packed full of interesting information about the brand.

The mini candles look absolutely adorable and, as always, the scents are enchanting, powerful and long-lasting. The set is expensive but the candles have a 20 hour burn time, which is amazing considering their size.

The only downside? It's impossible to know which candle to burn first!

Weekly Worship: The Representation Project

The Representation Project Film Poster

Any organisation that promotes a positive change in the world deserves a little worshipping. However The Representation Project is one that currently has my full attention and admiration. It is an organisation that uses all types of media content to expose injustices created by gender stereotypes, with the aim of shifting people’s consciousness towards change.

This non-profit organisation was founded by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, an actress and documentary film maker who wrote, produced and directed Miss Representation. Miss Representation is a famous 2011 documentary film that explores how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in influential positions by circulating limited and often disparaging portrayals of women.

Now, in the past few years, the media has delivered some amazingly strong, independent and heroic representations of women. However, if you think the misrepresentation of women has gone completely, think again and take a little look at this...

So thank God for the likes of The Representation Project, right?

If you fancy getting involved, there are many ways in which you can lend a helping hand. Supporting this organisation can range from simple actions, like tweeting and taking a pledge, to donating and becoming a representative. To find out more visit therepresentationproject.org.

Interview: Jane Wurwand

Jane Wurwand isn't just the founder of one of the world's best skincare brands (Dermalogica, if you're wondering), she is an inspiration to women everywhere. Known for championing female entrepreneurship, Jane founded Dermalogica FITE (Financial Independence Through Entrepreneurship) in 1999. FITE is a foundation that works to empower women entrepreneurs globally, through various different support systems.

I got the opportunity to interview Jane and, as sycophantic as it sounds, I felt honoured to pick her beauty brain. So sit back and enjoy our little chat...

Jane Wurwand Interview

What inspired you to work in the beauty industry? And how did your career journey begin?

I was 13 when I started in the business. I wanted to work because I wanted money to buy David Bowie records! I began as a Saturday Girl, sweeping up hair cuttings in the local salon in Broadstone, Dorset. I then would pick through the huge box of hair-cuttings, pull out all the hair-pins, sterilize the pins, put them into boxes, put the boxes on the trolleys and send the trolleys out onto the floor for the hairdressers - only to do it all over again! This was still the age of the bi-weekly updo in the small town in England where I grew up, where the work of Mr. Sassoon hadn't quite reached yet!

What is your career highlight?

My career highlight, one of many, has been being called upon by President Bill Clinton as a thought leader. I participated in the Clinton Global Initiative and spoke at the United Nations on the subject of women's equality in the workplace. It is an honor to speak on behalf of the professional skin care industry which puts more women into their own business than any other, for which I am very proud. This is also related to another highlight, the founding of Dermalogica's women's initiative, Financial Independence Through Entrepreneurship [FITE]. This initiative is a global program for women all over the world, empowering women, girls and communities everywhere, especially in developing countries. We have funded close to 40,000 women to grow their own business in the past 3 years alone.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to succeed in the beauty industry?

My advice to someone starting out is to make sure that you're in it for the long haul. The rewards are very tangible, but this business is one where you must prove yourself and earn your place by standing on your feet and working with your hands, as well as your mind and spirit, every day.

This is not an industry where there is immediate superstardom. Really, I think very few jobs can realistically offer that immediate gratification, however it is surprising how many people do expect it, and give up when they aren't on the cover of VOGUE the first year. Also, be prepared to invest in your own ongoing education, from the beginning. It is the only way that you will keep your edge. Almost every 'name' that you know in the industry worked their way up from the ground floor and have a passion for the business as a result.

Who is the ultimate beauty icon?

The ultimate beauty icon for me is Vidal Sassoon. He was so creative, so real, hard working, disciplined and such a visionary. He sensed what women really wanted - which was freedom and a sense of control over their own futures. This is what everyone wants, and I'm not just talking about our hair! And his genius was that he created an entire industry by flipping the paradigm.

Salon-owners attacked Sassoon when he suggested that the woman could wash and condition and style her own hair at home between salon-visits, which could then be spaced to every 6 weeks instead of weekly. Then Sassoon introduced his other idea: retail products that the consumer could buy for herself at the salon. This was a light-bulb moment which created an entirely new industry.

Vidal Sassoon
Vidal Sassoon
What are your makeup bag essentials?

My makeup bag essentials are Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel, SkinPerfect Primer SPF30 and Power Rich because I travel so much. Also I live in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, where the weather is usually quite dry and bright, so I need to keep my lipid-layer intact. I also never leave the house without the perfect black mascara and a good lipstick, usually brick-red.

What is the biggest beauty crime a person can commit?

The biggest beauty crime a person can commit is, of course, not protecting their skin against the sun. We all need to do this every day, even if we live some place where it's often foggy, grey or overcast. We also need to do this even if we spend much of our time indoors - this goes for men as well as women. That weathered, tan look really is just so over. Even Mick Jagger exfoliates.

What is your top beauty tip?

My top tip is to remember that your skin is alive and your hair and nails are not - this is a fact! Women may spend a fortune on their nails and hair and buy many related products that are backed by marketing jargon about 'health'. However the fact is, something which is deceased cannot be healthy or unhealthy - it is simply dead. Hair is dead - it lives beneath the surface in the follicle, however what we see is an organic by-product of a living process, which has ceased. It is important to take care of your hair and nails, however your skin is living and warrants more attention and service. Women will easily spend hundreds on cut, colour, blow-out and gel manicure but wash their face with deodorant soap they share with others in the shower.

My beauty tip is: place priority on your skin with a quality liquid cleanser, exfoliant, moisturiser, toner, serum, SPF and regular trips to a licensed skin care professional for a consultation and ongoing care.

News: The Benemobile

To all the girls that hoped to one day own a Penelope Pitstop car, dream no more! The beautymobile has finally arrived and it comes courtesy of Citroën UK and Benefit Cosmetics.

DS3 by Benefit

The two brands have collaborated on a one-off version of Citroën’s DS3. The 'DS3 by Benefit' will premiere at the UK Clothes Show Live (6th - 10th December), for which Citroën is a main sponsor.

Citroën and Benefit

The car is absolutely bootiful (get it?) - the exterior features colours from the Benefit palette, the brand’s signature pink and yellow ‘Candy Stripes’ motif and a graphic of the San Francisco skyline. The interior displays fabulous Candy Stripe Italian leather upholstery and pink detailing throughout.

Benefit Car

However, what makes this a car Penelope Pitstop would be proud of is the custom arm rest. It doubles as a makeup kit which contains a selection of Benefit products! Other touches include a handbag hook, fragrance dispenser and an ornate vanity mirror emerging from the dashboard. I am head over wheels in love!

Review: Dermalogica Clear Start Breakout Clearing Cooling Mask

Dermalogica Breakout Clearing Cooling Mask

The Promise: "Turn down the redness, rid your skin of breakouts! This potent masque helps clear breakouts while a cooling sensation refreshes and soothes"

The Price: £16.00 / $24.00

The Stockist: johnandginger.co.uk / dermalogica.com

The Hero Ingredients: Salicylic Acid, Thyme, Lavender, Camphor, Aloe Vera and Liquorice

Dermalogica Clear Start Breakout Clearing Cooling Mask

The Application: This mask has a gel texture and thin consistency. It glides over the face and neck easily and the majority of the mask is absorbed almost instantly. Only a very thin, tacky-like film is left on the skin until the mask is rinsed off.

The Breakout Clearing Cooling Mask contains camphor which, similar to menthol, feels tingly and cooling on the skin. Camphor is a great ingredient for soothing skin, so this mask is perfect for treating irritation and inflammation. The camphor also gives this mask a lovely menthol scent, just like the Vicks VapoRub!

Dermalogica Breakout Clearing Cooling Mask Review

The Results: A friend of mine suffers with bad acne, so it made complete sense for her to put this mask to the test.

She found that the Breakout Clearing Cooling Mask soothed her irritated and sore skin and, more importantly, helped to clear her skin. After trialling the mask for over a week, she noticed that both her spots and redness had been significantly reduced. Now the mask didn't remove her acne entirely, however it did remove approximately 80% of it. As far as she's concerned, this was an amazing result!

The Pro: This mask is as good at soothing skin as it is at saving it

The Con: Struggling to find one...

Are you fan of the new Dermalogica Clear Start range? Have you tried any other products from the brand that you would recommend?

Weekly Worship: Delarom Revitality Balm

Delarom Revitality Balm

Price: £54.00 30ml

Stockist: urbanretreat.co.uk

Delarom is a Parisian skincare brand that draws on the ancient principles of phytotherapy and aromacology. The brand use a combination of natural Mediterranean plant extracts, vegetable oils and essential oils and keep products free from parabens, phenoxyethanol and silicone.

The Revitality Balm is the first product I've tried from the range and, let me tell you, this was love at first application! The balm is designed to protect and hydrate skin, "enhancing brightness, vitality, comfort and firmness". The winter months have been taking a toll on my skin and after just one night of generously applying this product, I woke up transformed. I had nourished and healthier looking skin.

Like all balms, the Revitality Balm has an incredibly thick consistency. So thick in fact, that you have to melt the product in your hands in order to apply it. This means that applications can sometimes be a little rough but, trust me, it's worth it. The balm has a lovely (but gentle) floral scent and, unlike other balms, doesn't feel at all oily on the skin.

The only downside to this product? It's not available Stateside.

The Beauty Myth: Tanning Beds Are The Safest Way To Tan

Verdict: False

This myth is not just nonsense, it is harmful. There is absolutely no safe way to tan and, even if there was, a tanning bed certainly wouldn't be the safest option.

Tanning beds expose your skin to more concentrated doses of ageing UVA rays (the rays more likely to cause cancer). In actual fact, the World Health Organization has recommended that no one use tanning beds for cosmetic purposes, listing them as a “known human carcinogen”. For those who don't know, a 'carcinogen' is a cancer-causing substance or agent. Scary stuff.

In addition to increasing the risk of skin cancer, frequent use of sunbeds can also lead to premature skin ageing. I'm talking wrinkles, age spots and a seriously dull complexion.

In truth, the only safe way to achieve beautifully bronzed skin is to get it from a bottle. There are many self-tans on the market that have great staying power and the Vita Liberata Phonomenal 125ml (£24.99 Boots / $54.00 Sephora) is one of them!

News: The Organic Pharmacy Gets Personal

The Organic Pharmacy Beauty Elixir

Organic beauty may be stripped back but that doesn't mean it has to be basic. No one knows this more than The Organic Pharmacy and the brand's latest product is proof.

This new product I am referring to is the Beauty Elixir, a prescriptive anti-ageing cream that is tailored to suit your individual skincare needs. Obtaining your bespoke cream is easy and it begins with a thorough and in-depth one-on-one consultation with an Organic Pharmacy therapist. Each appointment will reveal your bespoke prescription based on answers to lifestyle choices, diet, metabolism, stress and current skincare routine.

Your prescriptive cream will then be formulated, combining a base of either cream or gel with one of five naturally derived complexes to tackle individual skin concerns. Your therapist will keep your details on record, inviting you to a follow up as part of the price. And if you don't get on well with the cream, The Organic Pharmacy will tweak the blend and give you a brand new pot! Is this a faultless service or what?

The Organic Pharmacy Beauty Elixir retails at £195.00 and is exclusive to Selfridges, London.

The Tuesday Tip: DIY Tinted Lip Balm

There is nothing more annoying than the last remains of a lipstick - you know, that final bit of lipstick that is permanently stuck in the bottom of the tube. Now you can, of course, scrape it out in the hope of gaining a few more applications. However, you could  use that last bit of lippie for something even better...creating your very own tinted lip balm! Making one is simple and I have a fool-proof recipe for you to follow.

You will need:
  • Petroleum jelly
  • A used-up lipstick
  • A cotton bud or cuticle pusher
  • A small clear storage bag (i.e. a sandwich bag or ziplock bag)
  • A small cosmetics container
  • Scissors

How you do it:
  1. Scrape out every inch of your lipstick using a clean cotton bud or cuticle pusher
  2. Pop the lipstick remains into a clear bag, along with petroleum jelly (following a one part lipstick to two part petroleum jelly ratio)
  3. Using your hands, mix the two ingredients together through the outside of the bag
  4. Once fully blended, cut off a bottom corner of the bag and - as if you were icing a cake - pipe the mixture into your empty container
  5. Voilà! Your tinted lip balm is ready for action

Review: Biologique Recherche Winter Tight and Bright Facial

The Promise: "This is a unique transitional facial that prepares your skin for the cold winter months ahead. This facial gives you the deepest facial cleanse, designed for purifying, lifting, toning and unifies the complexion, leaving your skin truly glowing throughout the winter months".

The Price: £150.00

The Place: EF MEDISPA Kensington, London

Key Products Used: Lotion P50w, Serum Elastine Pure, Amniotique E, Elastine Pure, Crème Biofixine and Fluid VIP02

The Treatment: The Biologique Recherche Winter Tight and Bright Facial was incredibly relaxing and rejuvenating. It was a 60 minute treatment that featured a deep cleanse, followed by a lymphatic drainage massage. The lymphatic drainage didn't feel at all uncomfortable, instead it just felt firm but gentle.

A variety of skin treatments were used including toners, face masks, serums and creams - all of which felt amazing on my skin. The products themselves came courtesy of Biologique Recherche, a French biological skincare line with over 30 years experience in developing some of the most powerful and effective skincare products in the beauty industry.

Although the treatment followed a specific structure, elements of it (in particular the products used) were altered to best suit my skin type. This was a huge advantage for me as I could guarantee my skin was getting what it needed, as well as what it wanted.

The Results: My skin looked amazing the second the facialist finished working her magic. I looked as if I had recently undergone a face lift. Both my cheekbones and brow bones had lifted and my laugh lines had vanished completely. And, if the lifting effect wasn't enough, this miracle facial left me with the most radiant, youthful-looking skin.

Now, what set this facial apart from the millions of others out there is that the results were long lasting. I had the facial over a week ago and my skin is still radiant, bright and tight!

The Pro: This Winter Tight and Bright Facial delivers amazing, instant results that have real staying power.

The Con: As amazing as the Biologique Recherche products felt on my skin, they didn't have the most appealing scent.

Själ Mineral Kalla Energy Tonic
Price: £43.53 / $70.00 150ml

I am very much of the belief that toners do nothing for you but take up space in your bathroom cabinet. However there are a few toners out there that offer great skin benefits. The Själ Mineral Kalla Energy Tonic is one of them...

The Mineral Kalla Energy Tonic is a skin-saving toner that provides long-lasting hydration, as well as protection against pollution. It provides dual protection as it counteracts internal stress through immune boosting adaptagens while offering barrier protection. It contains hero ingredients that include ginseng extract, arctic root and gold and silver infused in rose water. It has a lovely subtle scent and a handy spray dispenser for easy application.

However, what really makes me worship the Själ Mineral Kalla Energy Tonic is its ability to brighten the skin. After only two weeks of using this toner, my skin has become more radiant and even-toned. I am in love!

Elemis Pro-Intense Lift Effect Night Cream

The Promise: "This lift effect firming night cream is formulated with a powerful blend of gardenia stem cells, arjuna and lupin, which help reduce the appearance of sagging jowls, cheeks and chin. Facial contours appear shaped, and skin texture visibly improved".

The Price: £95.00 / $152.00

The Stockist: qvcuk.com / timetospa.com

The Hero Ingredients: Lupin, Arjuna Bark Extract, Gardenia Plant Stem Cells and Alaria Esculenta

Elemis Pro-Intense Lift Effect Night Cream Review

The Application: This anti-ageing night cream has a thick, creamy consistency that feels velvety smooth. It soothes and cools the skin the second it is applied and it has a gentle, spa-like scent. It applies easily and only a pea size amount of product is needed to cover the entire face and neck.

This cream does not feel at all sticky on the skin and  it absorbs quickly, so you won't find it rubbing off on your pillow!

The Results: This night cream claims to shape, firm and lift. I can't say much for its lifting abilities, however this anti-ager does firm the skin and improve its texture. It is also amazing at correcting pigmentation, helping to reduce the appearance of age spots, sun damageredness and hyperpigmentation.

Although it is not promoted as one, the Pro-Intense Lift Effect Night Cream is a great winter skin saviour. It does an amazing job at hydrating the skin and locking in moisture and it protects against skin damage caused by winter months.

Elemis Pro-Intense Lift Effect Review

The Pro: This night cream is a great all-rounder. In addition to being an anti-ageing hero, it helps to nourish, hydrate and protect the skin from environmental damage.

The Con:
At £95.00, it is on the expensive side. However, when you consider that only a tiny amount of product is needed per use, you do get quite a lot for your money.

Are you fan of Elemis? Have you tried any other products from the brand that you would recommend?

Weekly Worship: Look Good Feel Better

This week's Weekly Worship is not a stand-out skincare product, high tech gadget or fabulous beauty service. It is, in fact, an amazing charity that goes by the name of 'Look Good Feel Better'.

Look Good Feel Better (LGFB) is an international cancer support charity that provides free services for women and teenagers suffering from the visible side effects from cancer treatment.

Being diagnosed with cancer is heartbreaking, frightening and, at times, very confusing. If that isn't enough, treatment - as vital as it is - often causes visible side effects that can seriously affect a patient's self-esteem and confidence. Look Good Feel Better recognises and understands this less-talked-about issue and, as a result, is dedicated to improving the self-esteem and quality of life of those undergoing treatment for cancer.

This incredible organisation improves the appearance and self-confidence of cancer patients through complimentary self-help workshops and masterclasses that create and promote courage, support, confidence and community. Since the charity began in 1987, it has helped and supported millions of women across the world, helping to make a difficult time a little bit easier and a damn site more glamorous!

The organisation's corporate partners include Alterna Haircare, Beauty Blender, Dior, Philosophy,
Saks Fifth Avenue and Clarisonic. Hundreds of other beauty brands across the globe support LGFB by donating huge numbers of products and services to the cause. Even we can even get involved! To find out how, click here!

Interview: Debbie Thomas

Debbie Thomas is a highly respected skin specialist, whose talent and unique approach has taken her from Harley Street to Hollywood. She is a true skin saviour to some of Hollywood's elite and has worked with some of the world's most renowned skincare brands.

When it comes to skin, there isn't much Debbie doesn't know. So you can imagine how excited I was when I was given the opportunity to interview her...

Debbie Thomas

What inspired you to work in the beauty industry? And how did your career journey begin?

I started with a keen interest in holistic treatments. I loved how manipulating muscles or nerve endings could trigger positive reactions in the body, making people feel better physically and emotionally. After completing my beauty, massage and reflexology courses, I got my first job and quickly gained a strong client base for my facials.

I then developed adult acne and felt assured that my boss would be able to ‘cure’ me, she could not and neither could my GP. This was when my obsession with finding successful treatments began.

What is your career highlight?

Every time I get a new client through a recommendation I feel very proud. However my real career highlight was the first day I worked for myself in my own company. It was also the single most scary day. I didn't have lots of security if things didn't work out, so I told myself that I had to make it work no matter what.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to succeed in the beauty industry?

I think it’s about finding a niche or a specific area that you are passionate about and become an expert in it. I still go on as many training courses as I can, as I think you can never know enough.

Debbie Thomas Facialist

Who is the ultimate beauty icon?

I think Eve Lom really was one of the first ‘super facialists’ and through her great techniques and products, she has become a global brand.

What are your makeup bag essentials?

La Roche-Posay tinted SPF 50 cream and Maybelline mascara are the basics I couldn't live without.
What is the biggest beauty crime a person can commit?

Not practising safe sun care.

What is your top beauty tip?

Go for a skin consultation with a professional skin specialist at least once a year. Your skin can change with seasons, age, stress and lifestyle, so your home routine needs to change seasonally as well. I also recommend monthly facials to make the most of your skin.

Ask TBI: How To Fight The Fade

Question: I have red hair and dye it every 6 weeks. However the colour always fades after just two weeks of having it done. Is there any way to prevent the colour fading so quickly? - Kelsey, San Diego.

Answer: Coloured hair will always have a nasty habit of fading, however red hair fades like no other! Red dyes rinse out more easily than brown or blonde dyes. To make matters worse, red hair is more likely to become damaged or faded as a result of UV exposure.

Luckily there are a number of little things you can do to help make your colour last:
  • After having your hair coloured, wait two days before washing it
  • Protect your hair from UV exposure with a hat, scarf or a hair protection product
  • Avoid shampoos that contain sulfate
  • Use a shampoos and conditioners that are specifically designed for colour treated hair
  • Avoid washing your hair every day
  • Wash your hair in cold water (if you're brave enough!)

I would also recommend using a colour enhancing conditioner once or twice a week. One of the best I have ever used is the Aveda Madder Root Colour Conditioner 250ml (£20.00 aveda.co.uk / $18.00 aveda.com). I honestly cannot recommend this product highly enough. This miracle conditioner contains madder root which helps to purify the scalp and hair. The natural colours of the madder root also intensify red hues, resulting in vibrant and glossy red hair that lasts!

Weekly Worship: Dr Bronner's Organic Almond Castile Liquid Soap

Dr Bronner's Organic Almond Castile Liquid Soap Review

Price: £5.49 / $9.49

Stockist: feelunique.com / amazon.com

During the last few years, Dr Bronner's Magic Soaps have achieved cult beauty status. I didn't really understand the hype until I started using one a few weeks ago. I have been using the Almond Castile Liquid Soap and let me just say this multitasker smells amazing, lasts forever and is certified organic.

The product claims to be an 18-in-1 magic soap, a miracle product that cleans just about everything. Now it is good but it’s not that good. However, although it doesn't really have 18 different uses (in my opinion!), it is still an amazing multitasking product. I use it for washing my body, washing my hair and even shaving! So, at just £5.49 a bottle, I guess you could say this soap is a miracle!

Interview: Jamie Stevens

Jamie Stevens is one sought-after stylist. He is the go-to hair guru for numerous A-Listers and he is forever lending his wisdom to high profile magazines across the world. Last year his talents were recognised when he was nominated for British Hairdresser of the Year. If that isn't enough to get you going, Jamie is the X Factor Hair Stylist in residence!

Luckily for me, Jamie took some time out of his ridiculously busy schedule to talk all things hair and beauty...

Jamie Stevens X Factor

What inspired you to work in the hairdressing industry? And how did your career journey begin?

I grew up in a family of hairdressers. My Mum, Nan and Great Granddad were all hairdressers. I initially started out as a professional footballer in my teens, following in my father’s footsteps. However a serious injury cut short my dream of Premiership glory and so I naturally fell into hairdressing and loved it!

What advice would you give to someone wanting to succeed in the industry?

Simply put, you have to be prepared to put in the hours! People only see the glamorous or fluffy side of what I do, but what they don’t see is the long days and nights working to get there. It’s about making yourself available for everything and everyone in the early days to gain as much experience as possible. Also, if you want to be the best you've got to work with the best, so surround yourself with talented people.

What is your career highlight?

It’s hard to pin it down to one as I've had so many fantastic experience. I've worked with some of the best names in hairdressing, launched my own salons and won numerous awards. I've also worked with celebrities and have been involved in many TV shows, such as The X Factor.

I have to say that being nominated for HJ’s British Hairdresser of the Year Award for the first time last year - as the joint youngest nominee in the award's 28 year history - has been a huge pinnacle in my career. The British Hairdressing Awards are like the Oscars of the hairdressing world! I’m nominated again this year and to see my name up there with the greats is a huge honour.

Who is the ultimate beauty icon?

I always think about beauty icons in two categories – icons that have stood the test of time and ones that are current and fresh right now. For me, the women that represent timeless beauty are Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly. They all represent old school glamour and each had their own distinctive style when it came to their hair - which we often see re-emerge in today’s hair trends.

Right now, I have to say Rihanna is one of my ultimate beauty icons. She is like a chameleon and she is always brave and adventurous in her hair styles. On the opposite end of the spectrum, yet equally as iconic, is Alexa Chung. She represents the epitome of effortless, undone chic.

What are your hair and beauty essentials?

A good pair of straightening irons are invaluable as you can use them in so many ways, from straightening to curling or creating texture. With using any heated tools, a heat protection spray is an absolute must before drying and styling, otherwise hair will become dull, dry and brittle. Try the TRESemme Pro Shine Heat Protect Style Primer as it protects hair from temperatures as high as 230 degrees. A set of non-snag bands and pins grips are an essential part of any hairdresser’s kit, whether it’s to scrape hair out of the way whilst at work or to take hair from coffee to cocktails in a quick 10 minute up-do.

What is the biggest hair crime a person can commit?

Getting stuck in a style rut. You wouldn't wear the same shoes or coat year in, year out, so why would you wear the same hairstyle for years? I have a three-strike rule whereby, every third time I cut someone’s hair, I encourage them to change it - even if it’s the subtlest tweak to keep the hair looking fresh and current.

Another hair crime is using the wrong products for your hair type and in the wrong way. For example, if you have fine hair and overload it with volumising products, it will do the opposite of what the product is designed to do. Instead it will weigh the hair down, making it limp. Make sure you seek advice from your hair stylist about which products to use and, more importantly, how to use them on your  hair.

What is your top hair tip?

When it comes to getting your hair to sit how you want it to, the key is to blow-dry it in the opposite direction. For example, if you want instantaneous volume with minutes to spare, tip your head upside down and blast it with a hairdryer in the opposite direction you want it to sit, working in a volumising product to give it some guts. Tip your head back and you’ll have head-turning body and bounce. Similarly, to achieve an obedient fringe, blow-dry it in the opposite direction you want it to sit and leave to cool, before brushing over to the correct side – this will ensure it sits in place throughout the day.
