What The F**k Is Ectoin?

Ectoin is a naturally occurring compound derived from single-cell bacteria that can be found in the unforgiving environments of deserts, salt pans, and hot springs. It is one of the newest buzzwords in beauty due to its many skincare benefits, so I thought I'd give you the lowdown...

Ectoin is known as an extremolyte, meaning it is able to protect organisms against dehydration, extreme temperatures, and a number of other environmental factors by providing a natural protective component on the outer layer of cells. It is considered a hero anti-ageing ingredient as it reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, increases skin elasticity, improves skin texture, and promotes skin barrier repair.

Ectoin is also a great moisturiser as it binds water and reduces transepidermal water loss, locking in moisture and stabilising the skin barrier. Its soothing and calming effect also makes it a go-to ingredient for treating redness, irritation, and inflammation. Whether skin is suffering from sunburn, allergies, or troublesome conditions like eczema and dermatitis, this saviour will bring relief and balance.

If that's not enough, this powerhouse ingredient supports skin's natural regenerative abilities, helping to repair damaged cells and promote the growth of fresh and healthy ones. The result is a refined skin texture, even tone, and a radiant complexion. Ectoin is suitable for all skin types, however it is particularly favourable to those with dry and/or sensitive skin.

Ectoin is found in the Biossance Squalane and Copper Peptide Rapid Plumping Serum (£54 lookfantastic.com). This gorgeous Biossance serum is supercharged with a number of active ingredients to deliver firmer, plumper-looking skin and a refreshed complexion. It is lightweight and absorbs quickly, feeling weightless and comfortable on the skin.
