What The F**k Is Matrixyl?

Matrixyl is the brand name of a synthetically produced anti-ageing peptide developed by Sederma Inc. in France.

Matrixyl cleverly mimics the behaviour of matrikines, which are the body’s naturally occurring cell-signalers and regulators. As collagen levels naturally degrade - due to ageing, smoking, excessive sugar consumption, and pollution - matrikines send signals to fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin. Synthetic peptides like Matrixyl have been created to mimic these effects, helping support and boost the production of new collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, which all naturally aid in refilling fine lines from within the skin. And the results are pretty impressive - a study by Croda International found that Matrixyl 3000 is able to delay photo-induced ageing by five and a half years in just two months!

Matrixyl is safe for all skin types and skin tones. It can also be used during pregnancy. It can also make a great retinol partner, as the emollient qualities of Matrixyl can help counteract the irritating side effects that often come with using a retinoid. On the other hand Matrixyl, like any other peptide, can be unstable ingredients, so if you’re using Matrixyl you might need to prioritise a peptide-friendly regime. High grade vitamin C (in the form of l-ascorbic acid) and copper peptides can both disrupt Matrixyl.

There are a few great products on the market that are formulated with Matrixyl. Here are my favourites...

Absolute Collagen | Booster Serum With Hyaluronic Acid

The Absolute Collagen Booster Serum With Hyaluronic Acid (£29.99 absolutecollagen.com) is formulated with Matrixyl 3000 to smooth fine lines and wrinkles and improve skin tone and elasticity. Matrixyl Synthe'6 is included to even out skin tone and smooth wrinkles by rebuilding the skin from the inside out.

Hyaluronic acid is also included to hydrate and plump the skin, while bakuchiol is used to stimulate cell turnover, boost collagen production, and reduce pigmentation.

The Booster Serum With Hyaluronic Acid is vegan, cruelty free, and dermatologically tested.

Mii Cosmetics | Smoothing Face Prep

Mii Cosmetics' Smoothing Face Prep is a lightweight primer that delivers the perfect base for makeup application. It glides over the skin to instantly blur fine lines and pores, smooth skin texture, and prolong and enhance the look of makeup.

In addition to providing instant skin benefits, the Smoothing Face Prep (£21 feelunique.com) is packed with Matrixyl 3000 to firm and plump the skin and improve skin texture. Lavender oil is also included to calm irritation and reduce redness, making this a great primer for those with sensitive skin.

The Ordinary | Matrixyl 10% + HA

The Ordinary's Matrixyl 10% + HA (£9.80 cultbeauty.co.uk) is a water-based serum designed to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This strength formulation contains two generations of Matrixyl, Matrixyl 3000 and Matrixyl synthe'6, at a combined concentration of 10%. These powerhouse ingredients work together to support natural collagen synthesis and skin repair.

The impressive formula utilises hyaluronic acid as its delivery system, enabling deeper penetration into the skin's surface, and providing a boost of hydration.

Lightweight and easy to apply, Matrixyl 10% + HA fully absorbs into the skin in less than a minute, delivering instant hydration and comfort.
