The Beauty Myth: Avoid Conditioner If You Have Greasy Hair

False. Greasy hair is caused by the overproduction of sebum on the scalp. Sebum is an oily/waxy substance that is secreted by the sebaceous glands in our skin. When the overproduction of sebum occurs on the scalp, the scalp will become oily and hair will look greasy.

Now conditioner can make the problem appear worse, however only when applied directly to the roots. Most conditioners contain various oils that, when applied to the roots, build on existing sebum - making hair look greasier. However this is not to say that conditioner should be avoided. Conditioner is a hair washing essential - it is great for keeping hair healthy, hydrated, smooth and shiny. So if you do have greasy hair don't avoid conditioner altogether, just apply it to the middle and ends of your hair only.

If you have greasy hair and still feel uneasy about using conditioner, try using an oil-free conditioner. I recommend the Living Proof Full Conditioner 236ml (£22.00 feelunique.com / $26.00 ULTA). It gives hair amazing shine, doesn't weigh it down and, most importantly, doesn't make it greasier!
