Founder: Armand Petitjean
History: Lancôme began as a fragrance house created by Armand Petitjean. Mr Petitjean started the business at the impressive age of 50, launching five fragrances at once. He wanted to create a beauty brand that encapsulated French elegance and share it with the world. Even the brand's name was inspired by the ruins of a French castle, Le Château de Lancôme - the roses in the area also inspired the company’s symbol of the single golden rose.
After the success of Lancôme perfumes, Petitjean moved into the skincare arena, creating a multi-tasking repair cream called Nutrix - a product that is still available today! In 1938, Lancôme extended its beauty offering further by creating a makeup range - helping to transform it into the brand we know and love today.
Years later, when Mr Petitjean was asked why he created Lancôme, he replied, “Because I had seen that two American brands had taken control of the beauty industry. A French brand should be up alongside them”.
Lancôme was acquired by L'Oréal in 1964.
