The Beauty Myth: Shave In The Opposite Direction Of Hair Growth

Shaving in the opposite direction of hair growth is actually the main cause of razor burns, redness and rashes, so it should be avoided. Going 'against the grain' may get you a closer shave, however it will also increase the possibility of irritation, cuts and ingrowing hairs. One reason for this is because shaving in the opposite direction of hair growth cuts the hair beneath the skin. As a result, hair struggles to find its way back out and ends up bending back into the skin - causing bumps and ingrowing hairs.

If you really don't want to compromise a close shave, I would recommend shaving in the direction of hair growth first and then re-lathering and gently shaving again - this time against the hair growth using light pressure and short strokes.
