The Beauty Myth: Lemon Juice Lightens Skin

True. The humble lemon is one of nature's greatest ingredients and it has been employed cosmetically for centuries. It is packed with antioxidants, has antibacterial and antiviral properties and is high in Vitamin C. However it is the alpha-hydroxy acids in lemon juice that lighten and brighten the skin and hair. The alpha-hydroxy acids in lemon juice have mild exfoliative effects which gently peel off the upper layer of skin, removing or lightening some age spots.

You can apply lemon juice directly to the skin using your fingers or a cotton pad. However be aware that lemon juice increases your skin's sensitivity to sunlight, so wait for it to dry on your skin before going out in the sunlight and be sure to apply an SPF!

If you don't fancy going down the raw lemon juice route, try The Hero Project's Vit C-30 Ultra Brightening Serum (£39 lookfantastic.com). This powerful serum features lemon peel, alongside other impressive ingredients to brighten the complexion, even skintone, reduce wrinkles and protect the skin from free radical damage. It contains 30% vitamin C too, making it one of the most potent vit c products on the beauty shelves. Another great option is the Image Vital C Overnight Masque (£46 strawberrynet.com). This beauty boosting treatment features lemon, as well as grapefruit and lime, to energize the skin and boost radiance. This gorgeous gel-textured mask also delivers water to the skin and locks in vital nutrients while you sleep.
