News: Europe To Put An End To Animal Testing

Cruelty Free International have announced that, from 11th March 2013, the import and sale of animal tested cosmetic products and ingredients will be banned in the European Union (EU).

This will cause major implications for the global cosmetics industry, as brands wishing to sell new cosmetic products and ingredients within the EU must not practice any type of animal testing anywhere in the world.

The ban comes after 20+ years of high-profile public and political campaigns from the likes of BUAV (British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection) and, Holier-than-thou, beauty giant The Body Shop.

This move sends out a strong global message of support for cruelty free beauty. It will be interesting to see how the likes of China, who still demand animal testing for cosmetics, will respond.

What do you make of this ban? Would you ever buy animal tested beauty products?

News: Drew Barrymore Launches FLOWER

We recently learnt that Drew Barrymore was set to launch her very own beauty line, FLOWER. With a serious lack of information, or even advertising for that matter, it was difficult to know what to expect. Lucky for us, the brand has just launched so we finally get to take a peek.

For those of you who don’t know, Drew - a self-confessed beauty addict actress – aimed to create a beauty line that provides women with high-end, quality products at affordable prices. As the woman herself put it, “on a business level, I wanted to give women the finest formulas. They deserve to have that level of quality, and I wanted to be the brand that delivers that to them. Women shouldn't have to pay a lot to look and feel their best".

It is clear that Barrymore means business. The FLOWER portfolio consists of more than 181 products, including everything from concealers and BB creams to nail polishes and cream eyeshadows. This is clearly not your average short-lived celebrity collaboration,

"We wanted something special. We were not interested in a trend, a celebrity brand that wouldn't last. We want FLOWER to be here and be here for a long time" says Carmen Bauza, vice-president of beauty and personal care for Walmart U.S.

FLOWER is now available in more than 1,500 Walmart stores and online at Walmart.com. What’s more, products range from $4.98 to $13.98!!

Sadly for us Brits, FLOWER is (obviously) only available Stateside. On the upside, there is always ebay!

So what do think of FLOWER? Have any of you American gals tried any products yet? If so, let us know what you think!

A-List Advice: Kim Kardashian

Ever wondered how Kim Kardashian maintains that beautiful super-soft skin? The answer, my dear readers, is sugar.

To rid her skin of dirt and dead skin cells, the Armenian beauty adds a spoonful of sugar to her body wash "for a gentle exfoliating experience".

Kimmy is clearly on to something. Sugar is a great gentle exfoliant; it is abrasive enough to remove dead skin cells without damaging or irritating the skin. Even better, sugar is a natural ingredient that contains glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxyl acid (AHA) that helps treat acne and pigmentation and diminish fine lines.
If you want to take this tip to the next level, try mixing a spoonful of sugar with a spoonful of olive oil to create an even more nourishing and natural exfoliator.

A-List Advice: Jennifer Aniston

We all hate wrinkles, particularly those around the eyes and apparently Jen Aniston feels the same!

To prevent wrinkles and fine lines, the 43-year-old actress applies a quarter of a teaspoon of Vaseline under each eye before going to bed.

Now doing this will have some benefits. Petroleum jelly is one of the strongest moisturisers around as it forces oils into the skin and prevents them from evaporating. Providing the eye area with this much moisture will make wrinkles seem lass apparent, however it won’t prevent ageing. Only skincare products with active ingredients can help to prevent wrinkles and fine lines.

So what do you think of this trick? Have you tried it?

Understanding...Rosehip Oil

Rosehip oil is a natural ingredient extracted from the seeds of wild rose bushes grown in the Southern Andes.

Rosehip oil carries many benefits that the indigenous population have been utilising for hundreds of years.

This miracle oil contains:
  • Vitamin A - which helps to delay the effects of skin aging, assist with cell regeneration, and promote collagen growth
  • Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids – which produces healthy skin cells and has anti-inflammatory properties
  • Vitamin E – which it is rich in linoleic and linolenic acids; two important skin nutrients
  • Retinoic Acid – which reduces the appearance of wrinkles and brightens skin

When you see a list like this, it will come as no surprise that rosehip oil has been scientifically proven to reduce the appearance of scars and relieve symptoms of eczema and dermatitis.
The indigenous population clearly aren’t the only ones who know of this oil’s amazing benefits. Victoria’s Secret Goddess, Miranda Kerr is a huge fan and has revealed that rosehip oil is the secret to her amazing glow. The Antipodean beauty says, “A key ingredient to look for in skin care products is rosehip oil. It’s rich in vitamin C and full of essential fatty acids, which really help replenish the skin”.

News: Katie Holmes Becomes The First Celebrity Face Of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics

Leaving Tom ‘controlling’ Cruise was the best thing that ever happened to Katie Holmes. Since the split she has starred on Broadway, launched a fashion line and has now become the the first celebrity face of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics.

We learnt last September that the Dawson’s Creek darling was set to become the brand's new spokeswoman. I personally thought this was a match made in heaven as, not only does the 34-year-old look like a younger version of Queen Bobbi, she embodies what the Bobbi Brown Cosmetic range is; stylish and sensible.

So, after a three month wait, the spring 2013 ad campaign has finally been revealed...

Although she appears very wooden (much like her acting), Holmes looks freaking' gorgeous in this ad and her hair is to die for!

You'll be pleased to hear that Bobbi Brown has put together a little ‘Get Her Look’ on the US site. I would definitely recommend taking a look at this if you want to achieve Katie's seductive smoky eyes or beautiful dewy skin!

A-List Advice: Scarlett Johansson

It was once revealed that manuka honey is the secret behind Scarlett Johansson’s red carpet glow. The Hitchcock star and all-round American beauty uses the native New Zealand ingredient as a face mask. She apples manuka honey directly onto a recently washed face and leaves it on for 10-15 minutes. The 28 year old swears by this natural treatment saying, “It really adds an amazing glow and your skin is so soft afterwards. It pulls out the impurities”.

Scarlett is clearly onto something. Manuka Honey is a natural remedy that New Zealand’s Maori tribe have been using for centuries. It is cherished for its powerful antibacterial and astringent properties which make it the perfect ingredient for treating acne and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

If you don’t fancy slathering sticky honey on your face I would recommend Antipodes Aura Manuka Honey Mask (£21.99 / $39.00 www.antipodesnature.com) or The Organic Pharmacy Manuka Face Cream (£37.96 / $76.00 www.theorganicpharmacy.com).
