Grooming: Getting Back To The Basics

Staying well groomed should be a priority for all men. However as simple as a good grooming routine can be, most of you struggle mastering one. You just need a small number of products to keep you looking gorgeous for us girls and, lucky for you, I'm going to share a few recommendations...

First up are the shower essentials and when it comes to body washes, I'd recommend anything by Korres - the Mountain Pepper, Bergamot & Coriander Shower Gel (£5.95 pharmeden.co.uk) is perfect. To keep skin soft, you'll also need to use a body scrub 2-3 times a week and you can't go wrong with the Rituals Samurai Cool Scrub (£10.00 uk.rituals.com). This refreshing exfoliator gently buffs away dirt and dead skin cells, leaving skin soft and supple.

Now a good shampoo and conditioner is also essential. Speaking honestly, there is nothing wrong with the classic Head & Shoulders duo, however brands like Aveda and Hanz de Fuko have some amazing haircare products worth trying too, especially if you're looking for something a little more results-focused. For hair styling I would look to brands like Toni&Guy or Bumble & Bumble. Post-shower you will, of course, need a long lasting deodorant - the Anthony Alcohol Free Deodorant (£16.00 lookfantastic.co.uk) is a great option.

Next up is shaving. If you're beardy, replace your standard shave time with some beard maintenance - trimming, brushing and conditioning - and be sure to use a good beard oil, like the Penhaligon's Sartorial Beard Oil (£46.00 penhaligons.com).

If you're a regular shaver, you'll want to invest in good equipment. The Kiehl's Smooth Glider Precision Shave Lotion (£15.00 kiehls.co.uk) is the perfect shaving partner as it allows for a closer, quicker shave with less nicks and cuts. As for post-shave lotions, I would recommend the Aesop Moroccan Neroli Post-Shave Lotion (£35.00 cultbeauty.com).

For the shave itself, I would recommend going electric for a powerful and problem-free experience. And it doesn't get more powerful than the new Panasonic ES-LT2N rechargeable shaver (£100.00 Boots). Designed for a wet or dry shave, this Panasonic shaver features a multi-flex 3D head for a precise and close shave, as well as a 45° pop up trimmer blade for pre-shave cutting and detailed grooming.

After the shower and shave, it's time to focus on the most serious side of grooming; skincare. The quickest a best way to care for your skin is to moisturise. A high quality moisturiser will keep the wrinkles at bay and ensure skin remains healthy and soft - the Deborah Mitchell Mens M4M Anti-Ageing Moisturiser (£64.00 heavenskincare.com) is a great choice.

You also want to pay special attention to your peepers, as the eye area is known for showing the first signs of ageing. Apply an eye cream each morning (and evening too if you have the time). I recommend the Jack Black Protein Booster Eye Rescue (£32.00 mankind.co.uk) as it's a lightweight, non-greasy cream that reduces puffiness, dark circles and the appearance of fine lines.

After you've treated your skin, it's time for the final step in the grooming routine; choosing the right fragrance. The industry is filled with a wide range of male fragrances, however scents don't get much hotter than the new Dunhill Icon Elite (£77.00 John Lewis). This eau de parfum, contains top notes of bergamot, kaffir lime, cardamom, heart notes of vetiver absolute, blue sage and back pepper and base notes of ebony wood, sandalwood, black suede.
