Fight The Blue Light | Protective Skincare

Blue light, also referred to as high-energy visible or HEV light, is known to have an impact on our health; it disrupts our sleep-wake cycle, affects melatonin production, and causes eye strain. Blue light is also linked to increased risk of eye disease, Blue light, also referred to as high-energy visible or HEV light, is known to have an impact on our health; it disrupts our sleep-wake cycle, affects melatonin production, and causes eye strain. Blue light is also linked to increased risk of eye disease, as well as increased risk of diseases such as diabetes and cancer. However, exposure to blue light can also have a harmful effect on our skin.

Unlike UVA and UVB light, blue light has the ability to penetrate deeper into the skin, reaching the dermis. Studies suggest that excessive blue light exposure can stimulate the production of free radicals and lead to the overproduction of pigmentation. This can result in skin damage, hyperpigmentation, inflammation, photo-aging, and the weakening of the skin’s surface. Some people are more sensitive to blue-light-induced damage than others. Those who experience rosacea, skin dryness, or hypersensitivity require greater protection from blue light exposure because their skin has already been exposed to damage.

One way of protecting skin from excessive blue light exposure is to either to use screen protectors on mobile devices or alter a phone’s display settings. However, to ensure protection from all LED devices, skincare products containing blue-light protecting ingredients are a must.

As Dr. Tiina Meder explains, “Active ingredients with proven HEV protection include vitamin E, vitamin C, coenzyme Q10, rosemary leaf extract (contains carnosic acid, one of most powerful antioxidants), beta-carotene, and astaxanthin. Oils that provide HEV protection include grapeseed, raspberry seed, evening primrose, jojoba, meadowfoam, and olive. There is also a new generation of epigenetically active ingredients, including teprenone and Undaria Pinnatifida extract, that help to protect and restore DNA and the mitochondrial activity of skin cells.”

Below are four blue light protecting products that contain some of these ingredients…

MGC Derma's CBD Stem Cells & Peptides Eye Cream (£65 mankind.co.uk) helps to reduce the appearance of puffiness, fine lines, and dark circles. Enriched with Cannabidiol, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, vitamin E, and peptides, this ultra nourishing eye cream replenishes moisture, smooths texture, and helps restore the elasticity of the delicate skin around the peepers.

The Meder Beauty Science Vita-Long Oil (£69 mederbeauty.com) is a luxe facial oil that normalises the activity of sebaceous glands to help tighten pores and restore skin’s barrier function. The lightweight serum is formulated with 10 natural plant and seed oils recreating the lipid complex of the skin's own protective mantle. Five powerful antioxidants - including rosemary extract, tocopherol, and vitamin C - neutralise free radicals and reduce the negative impact of UV radiation and HEV exposure.

Vita-Long Oil also contains a special rejuvenating complex created using cutting edge discoveries in genetics. The complex features three epigenetic ingredients - Coenzyme Q10, GGA, and ephermer - that help to slow down the ageing process and reduce the already-present signs of ageing, such as wrinkles, pigmentation, and sagging skin. This epigenetic complex also has a beneficial impact on the expression of positive genes responsible for the syntheses of structural elements and skin regeneration.

The iS Clinical Extreme Protect SPF 30 (£64 skincity.com) combines the latest anti-aging technology with traditional sunscreens to keep skin healthy and protected. This nourishing cream combines active skin-defending ingredients with hydrating extracts and soothing aloe vera, to protect the skin against inflammation and damage caused by UVA, UVB, and HEV exposure. Vitamin E, olive leaf extract, and centella asiatica protect and repair collagen and cell DNA, to limit the effects of free radical exposure on the structure and texture of the skin.

Finally, for proof you can protect your skin in all aspects of your beauty routine, we have the Ho Karan Supernatural Soap (£12 thisisbeautymart.com). Enriched with cannabis sativa (hemp) oil, sunflower oil, and rosemary extract, the Supernatural Soap cleanses the skin, whilst preserving its protective hydrolipidic layer. This gentle 99% natural soap bar also revitalises skin, softens skin, and smells gorgeously fresh!
