At Home Hair Hacks

We all have hair goals - whether it's a quest for thicker hair, bouncier hair, longer hair, or just healthier hair. Sadly not everyone is naturally blessed with the hair they want and even healthy hair can be hard to maintain, thanks to environmental aggressors (e.g. UV exposure and pollution), chemical processing, hot tools, and frequent wear and tear. Luckily there are some great DIY masks out there to help protect, treat, and improve the hair. The team at Luxurious Look - the leading online retailer of salon-based haircare products - has put together a few of their best recipes, as well as a guide to the products worth purchasing if you don't want to get your hands dirty.

If you have an irritated scalp, look to lemons for help! Luxurious Look's Lemon Hair Mask combines two tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice, with two tablespoons of olive oil and two tablespoons of water. The acidity in the lemon juice helps rid the scalp of any loose, dry flakes of skin, while the olive oil moisturises the newly exposed skin on the scalp. To apply this mask, you simply massage it in to damp hair, focusing on the roots, and let it sit for 20 minutes. When the time is up, simply rinse and shampoo your hair as normal.

The Monpure Clarifying Scalp Scrub (£63 luxuriouslook.co.uk) is a great product for treating the scalp. It helps alleviate symptoms of dandruff and psoriasis by clearing away dead skin cells, while rejuvenating the scalp with healing shea butter and Argan oil. Monpure’s Hydrate & Soothe Scalp Serum (£96 luxuriouslook.co.uk) is also worth a try. It boasts an anti-inflammatory solution that can be applied with a dropper to help calm symptoms of redness, acne, eczema, sun damage, and general stress on the scalp.

If you've got over-processed or damaged hair, try the super-easy-but-effective Honey & Avocado Hair Mask. It injects moisture into the strands to leave hair beautifully soft and shiny. Making the mask is simple, just mix one tablespoon of olive oil with two tablespoons of honey and half a mashed avocado. Apply to the hair, insuring the majority goes to the mid-length and ends, and then rinse well after 20 minutes.

A great product for dry and damaged hair is the Davines Naturaltech Nourishing Keratin Sealer (£21.50 luxuriouslook.co.uk). Specially formulated with natural active ingredients that include vegetal keratin, rice protein and a mix of amino acids, this product effectively seals the hair cuticles to increase brightness and softness, all while strengthening the hair fibre and preventing split ends.

If you have limp, lifeless hair that deserves a bit of body, try the Beer Hair Mask. Beer is high in yeast and B vitamins, which do a great job at plumping tired hair strands. To make the mask, just mix half a cup of flat beer (pour into a container and let it sit out for a couple of hours to deplete carbonation) with one teaspoon of light oil (sunflower canola) and a raw egg. Apply the mask to clean, damp hair and let it sit for 15 minutes before rinsing with cool water. Alternatively, decant flat beer into a spray bottle and spritz it onto dry hair. When the liquid evaporates, the remaining protein residue from the wheat, malt, and hops will continue to strengthen and structure the hair.

The Joico JoiFULL Volumizing Styler (£14.50 luxuriouslook.co.uk) is the perfect product for delivering fuller, thicker, and bouncier hair. It gives hair body while instantly adding shine and lift. Formulated with rice protein and bamboo extract, the JoiFULL Volumizing Styler has been designed to help strengthen and thicken hair by building volume and promoting tougher and shinier strands. It also includes lotus flower which encourages elasticity and leaves hair looking and feeling healthier.
