Interview: Su-Man Hsu

su-man-hsu-facialist-interview

What inspired you to work in the beauty industry? And how did your career journey begin?

I am not a beautician or a therapist. All my experience and skills come from being a dancer, shiatsu practitioner and pilates instructor. Merging these experiences together made me who I am as a facialist. It's a craft and it took me 10 years to perfect, so I see myself as a skin artist. I’ve always had a passion for the body and a desire to maintain beauty. It was only when I created my skincare brand, Su-Man, that I realised the beauty industry is a totally different world to what I was used to! There were so many hurdles and difficulties that I had not expected, especially regarding the business side of it. Luckily my husband, who is also my business partner, is a creative with great business skills and he helped me navigate my way through the commercial pressures without compromising my creative instincts.

Review: Skinbreeze Microdermabrasion Facial

The Promise: "Skin is smoother, fresher and clearer after just one treatment. Lines and wrinkles are reduced. Scars, acne scars, pock marks and stretch marks are eliminated. Instant results, that actually improve over time"

The Price: £150.00 per 60 minute treatment

The Place: Premier Laser Clinic, Suite 7, 116 Shaftesbury Avenue, London W1D 5EW

The Treatment: My Skinbreeze Facial began with orbital microdermabrasion and LED light therapy that exfoliates the skin and removes unwanted imperfections and dead skin cells. It involved a small, handheld device - featuring a rotating abrasive pad - being worked around my face and neck. Although 'abrasive' sounds a little rough, I promise you this treatment isn't; I just experienced a vibrating sensation that was surprisingly relaxing. In addition, unlike most other microdermabrasion treatments, Skinbreeze doesn’t use harsh crystals which can damage the skin. As the device exfoliated my face, it also omitted pulses of red light, which are designed to neutralise bacteria, reduce redness, boost circulation and stimulate new tissue production.

Review: Dermalogica Hydrablur Primer

review-dermalogica-hydrablur-primer-uk

Promise: "Blur fine lines and pores, hydrate and brighten for naturally-flawless skin. This lightweight, non-greasy primer minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and imparts a silky-smooth, luminous finish to skin."

Price: £38.00 / $46.00 22ml

Stockist: Selfridges / ULTA

Application: The Hydrablur Primer has a surprisingly creamy texture that begins to feel more like a traditional primer when blended into the skin. It applies really easily, however I do find I have to use a little more product than directed. It sets within a few seconds of making contact with the skin, so you don't have to wait a long before applying foundation. It doesn't feel at all greasy, works well with all skin types and is scentless, which I love.

Review: Pestle & Mortar Hydrate + Giveaway!

pestle-mortar-hydrate-review

Promise: "Blended with a mixture of patented peptides, this anti-ageing cream dramatically reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Naturally moisturising ingredients, including jojoba and squalane will instantly make your skin softer and firmer while powerful antioxidants pomegranate, green tea and vitamin E help fight free radicals".

Price: £38.00 50ml

Stockist: pestleandmortarcosmetics.com

Application: Before I even get into applying the cream, I need to discuss Hydrate's amazing packaging. Pestle & Mortar's latest skin saviour comes in an airless container and is dispensed by pushing down on the top of it; clean and oh-so-simple. You only have to push the top down once to dispense the required amount of cream, no more and no less.

Ask TBI: Dark Patches On My Face During Pregnancy

dark-patches-on-face-during-pregnancy

Question: I am four months pregnant and have just started developing dark patches under my eyes and around my mouth. What are they? How can I remove them? - Hannah, Belfast.

Answer: I think what you're describing is chloasma, a skin discolouration that is very common during pregnancy. The symptoms of chloasma are exactly as you described; patches of darkened skin that can appear on the face.
